About Let's Go

The Let’s Go curriculum provides physical education teachers with the resources to implement an in-school bicycle and pedestrian safety program for students in grades three through six, providing educators with the opportunity to meet students at their skill level with differentiated lessons. The program focuses on the skills and knowledge necessary to prevent the most common causes of collisions and errors of the upper-elementary age group as they navigate the built environment.

The program was expanded and the curriculum was redesigned in 2016 to be more inclusive of walking as part of active transportation. The curriculum is the result of the collaboration between bicycle and pedestrian safety educators, transportation professionals, neighborhood safe street advocates, curriculum specialists, teachers, adapted physical education specialists and school administrators.

In addition to students learning to safely navigate as walkers and rollers through this program, Let’s Go is an invitation for students to be healthy and active in their daily lives. Let’s Go also includes suggestions for adaptations for students who may have balance difficulties, behavioral challenges, low physical fitness abilities and also includes learn-to-ride instructions. Washington state revised its physical education standards in 2016 and this new curriculum maps to the state standards.

“I am excited to teach my students ways to independently travel around their neighborhoods safely.” — Shirley Briones, Cascadia Elementary School P.E. Teacher

In the face of urgent climate change concerns, Let’s Go is also a call to action, encouraging bicycling and walking as an everyday activity, for the purposes of transportation, recreation and transformation of people and places.

Cascade trains and provides in-class support for PE teachers to provide the three-week program. Cascade currently works with the districts of Seattle, Edmonds and Highline to schedule teachers to borrow our fleet of 30 bikes, helmets, equipment and a bike trailer.

The Let's Go program is sponsored by Western Washington Honda Dealers, Seattle Children's Hospital. Funding is also provided through grants by the Washington Traffic Safety Commision.
